1. Has there been a fall onto an outstretched hand, recent accident or direct trauma?
No = go to 4; Yes = go to 2;


2. Is there immediate swelling to the injury site?
No = go to 4; Yes = go to 3;


3.Is there a deformity to the wrist, hands or fingers?
No = go to 4; Yes = seek medical advice if possible


4. Is there pain and increased movement at the injured joint?
No = go to 5; Yes = Sprain;


5. Are there any pins and needles or numbness in the hand or fingers?
No = go to 9; Yes = go to 6;


6. Is the pain worsened when the front of the wrist is compressed and/or positive Tinel’s sign?
No = go to 8; Yes = go to 7;


7. Is there wasting to the thenar eminence in the hand?
No = go to 9; Yes = Carpal tunnel syndrome;


8. Do the symptoms worsens with Upper Limb Tension Tests (ULTT)?
No = go to 9; Yes = Neuropathy;


9. Is there pain and morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes, and the patient is older than 50 years?
No = go to 10; Yes = Osteoarthritis


10. Is there pain and morning stiffness lasting less than 30 minutes, and the patient is older than 50 years?
No = go to 11; Yes = Inflammatory joint;


11. Is there pain on resisting thumb movements and positive Finkelsteins test?
No = go to 12; Yes = Tendinopathy (De Quervains);
